So the 61st Annual Grammy Awards has just passed and we at Expand Culture are wondering, was it a flop?
The Grammys is one of the most looked forward to award show by both celebrities and viewers. It’s a night to celebrate music and secretly judge your favourite celebs outfits. We get to see celebrities battle it out to take home a highly desired award. Well, they don’t actually ‘battle’ but you get the point! The night which has previously been hosted by a range of different celebrities such as, Queen Latifiah, LL Cool J & James Corden (Our favourite host) was hosted by the cool Jazz & Soul singer Alicia Keys! Alicia made her hosting debut on one of the biggest stages at the Grammys Awards on Sunday night despite some viewers wondering what her approach would be considering her usual laid back style.
We at Expand Culture wondered whether she would be up to par with James Corden who hosted the past two years. Corden, a big name in this industry with his hit chat show ‘The late late show with James Corden’ was a clear favourite as a host with his light hearted jokes and personality.
However, we were impressed with the 15 time Grammy Award winner. Keys showed no signs of nerves, giving off a relaxed and welcoming vibe, while also inviting everyone to “let their shoulders drop” stating
“I want everybody in here who might be feeling a little nervous, might be feeling, you know, a lot of energy. Just let your shoulders drop,” she began. “Just know I got you, I am going to take care of you tonight, I got you tonight, yes, I do.” Alicia Keys also opened the 61st Grammys with what her view on what music is all about.
“It’s what we march to. It’s what we rock to. It’s what we make love to. It’s our shared global language. And when you really want to say something, you say it with a song?”
Alicia also welcomed out some of her “sisters”, Lady Gaga, Jada Pinkett Smith, Jennifer Lopez and Michelle Obama. Yes, you heard right! Michelle Obama! (*Crying face*) In our view Keys helped make the night!
Although, we were thinking about how there are some huge names within the music industry like, Beyonce & Jay-z, Ariana Grande, Ed Sheeran to name a few. But where were they? All these celebs decided to opt out of attending the highly anticipated awards show on Sunday night. Other celebs such as Taylor Swift was nowhere to be seen. Was the hit maker Rihanna in attendance?? Nope, the Barbados beauty also took a pass this year!
We know why Ariana Grande wasn’t in attendance, as she’s been click, click, click & posting to twitter after pulling out of performing on the night due to clashing with Grammy producer Ken Ehrlich.
Grande had a roller-coaster of a year in 2018, from a whirlwind engagement to the release of an album entitled ‘Sweetner’ receiving a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Vocal Album. Ariana Grandes life and music was and still is one of the biggest stories in everyone’s mouths. Releasing her highly anticipated album ‘Thank U, Next’ just days before the Grammys, she was set to perform on the night. After disagreements with the show’s organizers she pulled out. She wrote in a series of Tweets
“It was when my creativity and self expression was stifled by you that I decided not to attend,”
Like come on Ken, let a girl live and performs what she wants. This came after producers released a statement claiming it was Grande who could not pull something together in time despite submitting three songs to perform. Not being able to keep her mouth shut for long, Grande exploded in the form of tweets claiming they were stiffling her creativity & self expression.
With performance from artist like H.E.R., Cardi B, Lady Gaga & many more, we at Expand Culture feel the night lacked the buzz that it used to give many years ago! Is it due to the fact that everyone’s favourite artist are dropping out of attending every year? Maybe. Who knows.
